The difference between a baby carrier and a sling
A newborn needs a safe and cosy environment, which is best guaranteed if you carry your child as close to you as possible. A baby carrier or sling is ideal for this, and slings are particularly soft and cosy, which makes them particularly suitable for newborn babies. They mould perfectly to the wearer and the baby. Initially, putting on the baby sling correctly requires some practice and you need to learn at least one tying technique. However, once you have mastered this small challenge, attaching the elasticated sling is extremely easy. The elasticated fabric makes it easy to prepare the sling and then all you have to do is put your baby in it.
Our range includes the Ergobaby Aura sling, which can be used from birth (3.2 kg) to around one year of age (11.3 kg). Aura is made of viscose, a light and elastic fabric that does not irritate baby's sensitive skin. It has no hard edges, buttons or zips that could damage newborn babies' skin. The breathable fabric ensures pleasant cooling when carrying. After using a sling, you can then switch to an Ergobaby carrier. Alternatively, you can use a baby carrier right from birth. The big advantage is that baby carriers are easy to put on and take off. Most baby carriers can also be used over a longer period of time than a sling.
The perfect carrier and carrying position for every age
Ergobaby offers an extensive selection of baby carriers and slings. When deciding on a sling or carrier, it is important to know which carrier is suitable for which age group and in which carrying position it can be used.
The Aura sling is particularly recommended for the period from birth, as the fabric is extremely soft and there are no buckles that could pinch your baby's delicate skin. Read more about the advantages of a baby sling in the paragraph above. Alternatively, you can also use a baby carrier from birth. The Omni Dream, Omni Breeze, Adapt, Omni 360 and Embrace models are suitable for this purpose and, with the exception of the Embrace carrier, these carrying systems can be used until around the age of four, when the baby has reached an approximate body weight of 20 kg. The Embrace carrier can be used up to around the first year of life (11.3 kg), as it is more like a sling and the wide fabric of the shoulder straps moulds to your body. The Away carrier is suitable for your child from around the fourth month up to around 36 months (5.4-15.9 kg) and is ideal for use after a sling, for example. There are a few things to consider when using a carrier in a specific carrying position, and not every carrier is suitable for every position or every age of your child. Find out more now about the right way to carry your new carrier.
Carrying in the front carry position
In the belly carry, the baby is carried facing you. This carrying method is possible from birth until the end of the babywearing period. It promotes a particularly close bond with the baby, as the closeness stimulates the production of the positive hormone oxytocin, which enables an even more intensive bond and makes the baby feel safe and secure. In addition, the belly carry method allows optimum interaction with the baby and enables you to keep an eye on it at all times. The baby is in its comfort zone and can discover the world from a safe environment. This carrying method offers the best interaction with the child and gives them a feeling of security, which is why many parents favour it throughout their child's entire life. A healthy rounded back and the spread-squat position ensure optimum ergonomic comfort for the baby. Belly carrying is possible with all Ergobaby carriers and slings. The cosy Aura sling is particularly suitable for newborns.
Carrying in the front carry
When carried front-facing, the child has everything in view and can explore the world from the parent's perspective. However, this carrying method is not suitable for newborn babies. Your baby should have reached certain stages of development before you can use the front-facing mode: first of all, complete neck and head control is required. The chin should protrude beyond the back section when the child is correctly positioned in the carrier. This is usually the case at 5 to 6 months. For optimum comfort for parents, your baby should weigh between 6.4 kg and a maximum of 13.4 kg. Use this carrying method if your baby develops the urge to always look forwards and becomes restless in other carrying methods. The front-facing mode should be used as a short and active carrying method for a maximum of 20 minutes and not as the main carrying method for several hours in order to avoid possible sensory overload. The front-facing mode can be used with the following Ergobaby carriers: Omni Breeze, Omni 360, Omni Dream, Embrace and 360.
Carrying in the hip carry mode
The hip carry can be used from the age of 6 months, provided the baby has independent head and neck control. This position offers a comfortable alternative to the frontal belly carry for shorter periods of time, as the centre of gravity of the carrier is shifted. The baby sits sideways on the hip, which means it can see more than in the front carry and can follow exactly what the parents are doing. The close body contact and the ergonomic M-position of the baby's legs and hips are also maintained in the hip carry mode. The hip carry mode can be used with the following Ergobaby carriers: Adapt, Omni 360, Omni Breeze, Omni Dream and 360.
Carrying in the back carry mode
In order for your baby to be carried in the back carry mode, it must have independent and safe head and neck control. This carrying method is suitable for babies who weigh at least 7.8 kg and can sit independently without support. Every baby develops differently, but as a rule the back carrying method can be used from 6 months+. Many parents find this carrying method more comfortable, especially for premature and heavier children. Your baby is carried on your back like a rucksack. Make sure that the bum is low in the carrier and the knees are raised. It is important that the airways and face are clear. The back carrying method can be used with the following Ergobaby carriers: Adapt, Away, Omni Dream, Omni 360, Omni Breeze and 360.
The newborn insert
The newborn insert is an optional accessory and is used from birth (from 3.2 kg) up to around 4 months of age to ensure that your baby sits optimally and in an ergonomic position within the carrier. The insert ensures that your little one's legs are squatted and slightly spread out. The thighs are well supported and the back has a slightly rounded shape. The head and neck are also optimally supported.
The newborn insert is placed inside the carrier to give even the smallest babies an optimal position. As soon as your baby is big enough, the insert is no longer needed. However, please note that not all Ergobaby carriers require a newborn insert. Therefore, when buying, you should pay attention to the weight or age from which you can use the carrier. Some models can be used from birth without a separate newborn insert.
A carrier for every person
Every Ergobaby carrier is individually customisable and can be perfectly adapted to the needs of each person. This means that the carriers are suitable from petite to large sizes (XS-XXL). The adjustment straps can be easily adjusted to the right size in just a few simple steps so that you can quickly and comfortably find the perfect fit for you in everyday life. With most Ergobaby carriers, the shoulder straps can even be crossed over for particularly petite people.
The slings also automatically adjust to the individual body size and stature when tied to ensure an optimum fit.
Travelling with the baby carrier in bad weather
In adverse weather conditions, you have the option of carrying your baby close to you in the carrier to protect them with your own body heat. However, if the conditions are particularly uncomfortable, you can use an all-weather cover for your baby carrier, which can be easily attached to the carrier with press studs. The warm fleece lining ensures that your little one stays cosy and warm, while the water-repellent outer layer and hood protect against wind and rain. For added comfort for the wearer, pockets have been integrated for the hands, which are also lined with fleece.
